Coin Details:
On November 24, 1986, the United States Mint released its first Silver Eagles as a result of the American Eagle Bullion Program. This program was authorized by Congress in 1985 to produce gold and silver bullion coins with their weight, content, and purity guaranteed by the United States Government. The coins are legal U.S. tender, with a face value of one U.S. Dollar. Each coin weighs in at one troy of pure .999 fine silver and measures 1.598″ (or 40.6mm) in diameter with a thickness of .117″ or 2.98mm.
The obverse design, based on German-immigrant sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman’s U.S. “Walking Liberty” half-dollar, depicts Lady Liberty, draped in the American flag, in all her majesty. The sun rises on the left side of the coin, as she stands there with one arm outstretched, and branches of laurel and oak cradled in her other arm, symbolizing both civil and military glory. Inscribed is the word “Liberty”, the phrase “In God We Trust“, and the year it was minted.
The reverse side of the coin was designed by United States Mint sculptor-engraver John M. Mercanti, and features an American bald eagle and shield, with 13 stars that represent the 13 original American colonies, positioned above the eagle’s head. The eagle holds arrows in the right talon, while there is an olive branch in its left. The reverse bears the inscriptions “United States of America”, “1 oz. Fine Silver”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “One Dollar”.
